Dr. Spence was the son of Milton Old Spence and Iola Benton Spence. On May 20th, 1944 he was married to Carolyn Massey Spence of Elizabeth City who predeceased him in 2004 after sixty years of marriage.

Dr. Spence attended Louisburg College in Louisburg, North Carolina and the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry where he acquired his degree as a Doctor of Dental Surgery. Dr. Spence interrupted his education and enlisted in the United States Army in 1944 and served nearly two years in England and France, through the end of World War II. Following his graduation from dental school, he relocated to Elizabeth City where he practiced dentistry for forty-three years.

Dr. Spence was extremely active in the community and contributed significantly to the development of Elizabeth City and Pasquotank County. He was active in the Elizabeth City Kiwanis Club serving as president. He was active for over twenty years in the Elizabeth City Rotary Club. Dr. Spence served on the Elizabeth City/Pasquotank County Board of Education during the 1960s and 1970s. During his tenure, the Elizabeth City and Pasquotank County School Systems were consolidated and the schools were converted from racially segregated to fully integrated. Dr. Spence was a founding member of the Board of Directors of Methodist College, Fayetteville, NC, and he was a founding member of the Elizabeth City Golf Club. He was a sixty-three year member of First United Methodist Church in Elizabeth City and chaired various boards and committees during that time. He taught Sunday School and was a certified lay speaker

He is survived by his children, Lauren, William and Penny; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Dr. Spence was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Spence of Richmond, Virginia; sister, Sara Spence Butler of Suffolk, Virginia; and son-in-law, Eddie Raby.
