Rites for Last Veteran

Last rites for Jacob McBride, Noble County's last Civil War veteran, held in the First Methodist Church, Tuesday afternoon, were largely attended. Full military rites were accorded by the local American Legion Post and the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War with services at the church and cemetery.
A male quartet sang two numbers, and following the sermon by Rev. Walter Brown, the D. of U.V. used the rites of the G.A.R. with Mrs. M. E. Merry, secretary of the Soldiers' organization in charge. Mrs. Mayme Smith of the Sarahsville D. Of U.V. sang "Are You Ready for the Countersign." The services closed with Mrs. Paul McVay singing "Taps," with Miss Wava Williams at the organ.
Pallbearers were Eastman Archer, Lewis E. Young, Walter Douglass, William Still, Richard Clark, and R.R. Briggs, all members of the American Legion Post. The Caldwell High School Band headed the cortege to the cemetery, playing funeral dirges, with the patriotic organization with their colors marching as escorts to the funeral car, which carried the body of last of the "Boys in Blue" to his last resting place. The Murphy funeral home was in charge of the arrangements.
