Mrs. William T. McEwen
Mrs. Alice McKnight Fleming McEwen, 96, long-time resident of South Main Street, died early this morning at Graymere Nursing Home following an extended illness. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 10 a.m. at Oakes and Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Terry Ailor, minister of the First Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. A descendant of pioneer Maury County settlers from North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Confederate Veteran William Overton Fleming and the late Mary Jane Hollingsworth Fleming. She was the widow of William Theodoric McEwen, who had been associated with the phone company for more than 45 years at the time of his death in 1940. Prior to her marriage to Mr. McEwen, she was employed as an operator for the phone company as one of the first group of women in that company. She was a member of the Methodist Church. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Clariss M. (Mary Alice) Cook, Columbia, Mrs. James (Margaret) Buchanan, Tigerville, S.C., Mrs. Clarence F. (Marian) Alexander Jr., Mt. Pleasant; two sons, Thomas Overton McEwen, Columbia, James Everly McEwen, Birmingham, Mich., (a third son, William Erwin McEwen, was fatally injured in an automobile accident in July 1937); nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Active pallbearers will be her grandsons and grandsons-in-law, C.F. Alexander III, William Daniel Alexander, James Richard McEwen, Stephen Erwin McEwen, Thomas Alfred McEwen, William Miles Cook, LTC C.M. Cook Jr., James Milan, Earl Pettus, Leon Morrow and Ellis Hamlett. Mrs. McEwen's nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers.
