Father Peter Paul Borda, age 86, died September 28, at Nazareth House. He was born in Malta, son of Karmenu and Karmena Borda. He was educated in Malta, before entering the diocesan order of the Society of St. Paul. He attended St. Mark's College, in Notabile, Malta, before going on to seminary training at the Gregorian University in Rome and the University of Malta. He was ordained to the priesthood in Vietouose, Gozo, Malta in 1942, by Archbishop Michael Gonzi. After World War II, Father Borda moved to Melbourne, Australia, where he acted as chaplain to migrants from 1949 to 1952. He became a naturalized citizen of Australia in 1958. From 1958 to 1963, he served as diocesan vicar for religious, as well as spiritual director of the St. Clare Catholic Social Club in Melbourne. Father Borda came to the Diocese of San Diego in 1964. He served briefly as assistant pastor at parishes in San Diego, Chino and Victorville, prior to being named in 1970 to be associate pastor of St. Mary in National City. He ministered there until 1977, when he was transferred to St. John the Evangelist in Encinitas and later to St. Charles in Imperial Beach. In 1980, he returned to St. Mary in National City, where he served through 1983. Father Borda ministered briefly at St. Catherine Labour, before retiring in 1984 for health reasons. He resided at Nazareth House from 2002 until his death. Viewing will take place from noon to 5:30 p.m., followed by the Vigil for the Deceased at 7 p.m., on Tuesday, October 4, at Berge-Roberts Mortuary, 607 National City Boulevard, National City. The Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, October 5, 10:00 a.m., at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 410 West 18th Street, National City. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.
