Ned was born in Crewe, Virginia on October 29, 1921 to Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Henry Old.
After graduating from Crewe High School, Ned attended Fork Union Military Academy and Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI), prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army on September 18, 1942.
Ned proudly served our country during World War II, where he was stationed on the strategically significant Japanese island of Saipan, just 1,300 miles away from the home islands of Japan. In Saipan, Ned served as a mechanic, working on various military planes including the B-17s and B-29s.
