WEST PEORIA -- The Rev. James D. Shaughnessy, 84, of St. Joseph's Home died there at 7:50 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17, 1998.

He was born Sept. 21, 1913, in Pontiac to James Daniel and Julia Camilla Snyder Shaughnessy.
He was preceded in death by one sister.

He was ordained on June 2, 1940. He served as assistant pastor at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Moline in 1940, St. Bernard's in Peoria in 1941, St. Patrick's in Peoria in 1942 and St. Cecilia's in Peoria in 1943.

He served as chaplain at St. Francis Hospital in Peoria in 1942 and Guardian Angel Orphanage in Peoria in 1949. He served as pastor of Sacre Coeur in Creve Coeur in 1953 and St. Cecilia's in Peoria in 1976, retiring as pastor emeritus in 1993.

He was named to head the Peoria Social Action Institute in 1942. He attended Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. in 1948. He was the founding director of the Murphy Center for Liturgical Research at the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Ind., in 1971.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Home. Monsignor James Campbell will officiate. He donated his body to medical science. Wright & Salmon Mortuary in Peoria is in charge of arrangements.
