Wasilla resident WILLIAM PAUL KOHLRUS, 74, died at home Aug. 31, 2001, after a long illness.

A memorial service with military honors and a military chaplain officiating will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at VFW Post 9365, 301 E. Lakeview Ave., Wasilla. His remains will be placed at Fort Richardson National Cemetery.

Mr. Kohlrus was born May 18, 1927, in Ellis, Kan. He served for 21 1/2 years in the U.S. Army, where he received education and training in military justice, Geneva Convention, code of conduct, low-speed radio operator, military policeman, Seventh Army NCO Academy, and graduate in child development. He retired Sept. 1, 1967, and he moved to Wasilla in September 1997.

Mr. Kohlrus received numerous decorations, medals, badges and commendations in the U.S. Army, including National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Occupational Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Expert Rifleman and Expert .45 Caliber Pistol. Mr. Kohlrus was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Retired Enlisted Association. He was a past post commander of Colorado Springs, Colo., VFW Post 4051.

He enjoyed fishing, bowling, pool, and stamp and coin collecting. The family said: 'There is a special place in our hearts, secure in memory for him as a husband, father, grandfather and brother for his kindred spirit, tender heart and love of family and friends. Willie was especially loved for his strong desire for reunions, bringing together immediate and extended family for fun, laughter and sharing memories. His family as well as his friends were very special to him. He is gone from our lives but never from our hearts.''

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Karl and Anna Kohlrus; two brothers; and one sister.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Linde Kohlrus of Wasilla; daughters and sons-in-law, Susann and Ernie Welton, and grandson, Kyle Welton, of Wasilla, Petra and Mike Jones, and granddaughter, Petrina Kohlrus, of California; son, Frank Kohlrus of Florida; four brothers and five sisters of Washington, Illinois, Texas, Kansas and Oregon; and many nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were by Valley Funeral Home & Crematory of Wasilla.
