Clifford was born December 7, 1902 in Lime Springs, the son of Hans and Hulda (Hanson) Foss. As a teenager he worked on the George E. and Rose Vine farm five miles south of Decorah. He married their daughter, Ruth, on September 4, 1927 and they farmed there for almost 70 years. In 1962, he retired from active farming and he and Ruth opened the English Prairie Museum, which they ran for 25 years. In 1994, Clifford moved to Decorah.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, his parents; and four brothers: Alvin, Harris, Lester, and Max.
