A head injury while working on a railroad tressel during the Civil War, caused his blindness. Consequently, it also disqualified his service as a soldier during that war. And though blind most of his later life, he was a rural mail carrier in the Kosse area for a number of years. He delivered the mail from his one horse buggie with an accompanying grandchild to put the mail in the proper mailbox.

Mr. Mahan Blair Autry, author of The Family and Descendants of Capt. John Autry, in a letter to Mrs. Sally Viola Borden née Price of San Antonio, Texas, acknowledged that he did not remember Cornelius Powers Autrey (1822-1896) as being a son of Cornelius Autry when he published his book in 1964. However, in this letter he acknowledged this and addressed his oversight that Cornelius Powers "C. P." Autrey was indeed a son.
