Charles H. Challand of Waterman died Thursday, January 11, 1951, at St. Mary’s Hospital in DeKalb. He had not been in the best of health for some time but was taken to the hospital after a stroke a week before his death.

Mr. Challand was a quite unassuming man of gentle nature. He attended to his affairs and found little fault with his neighbors. For the last three years he and his son had made a specialty of fancy thoroughbred Spotted Poland China hogs. They had held sales for two years which attracted the attention of buyers from over a large territory, almost nationwide. Through his activities in the breeding business he had become widely known among farmers.

Charles Henry Challand was born April 13, 1880, at Waterman, a son of Henry and Emily Challand. February 3, 1909 he was married to Alma M. Baie. He made his home on the farm between Hinckley and Waterman, south of Route 30 for more than 30 years and spent his entire life in the community.

Surviving are the widow, Alma and one son Wayne.

Funeral services, held Sunday afternoon from St. Paul’s Evangelical Church, were largely attended. The Rev. L. G. Weber officiated. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. Bearers were Lloyd Waldee, Enos Baie, James Kitner, Robert Wilson, Earl Bastian and Floyd Sanderson.
