Mrs. Clara Catherine Phillips, for 38 years a resident of Zena, Polk county, died Saturday at a local hospital at the age of 83 years.


Mrs. Phillips was born at St. John's rectory, Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, England, December 1, 1848, and was the eldest daughter of the late Rev. Thomas Robinson, D. D., rector of St. Bartholomew's Church, Liverpool, England.


She was graduated from St. Elphin's seminary for clergy daughters at Warrington, and in March, 1869, was married to the late Charles Kendrick Dawson of Wrexham, North Wales.


A son, Charles Kendrick Dawson Jr., of Roseburg was born to the union.


Coming to the United States in 1892, she resided with her brother, Rev. Albert Robinson, Presbyterian minister at Zena.


July 4, 1895, she was married to the late John Phillips of Zena and has since resided on the farm there. Mrs. Phillips suffered a paralytic stroke last September, and was removed to the Deaconess hospital, where she remained until her death. She was an energetic worker and was associated with all activities of the Zena church. She was organizer and president of the Women's Missionary society.


She is survived by her son in Roseburg; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Greta Hiatt of Salem; and several nephews and nieces, among whom is Rev. Thomas Robinson of Oakland, Ore.
