YARMOUTHPORT — Helen M. Allan, age 96, of Yarmouthport, Mass., died Sept. 6, 2013, after a courageous battle against the effects of Parkinson's disease. Her strength of character was revealed in the way she dealt with that debilitating illness with grace and tolerance.

Born July 13, 1917, in South Boston to Thomas and Mary Donnelly, she attended Boston Public Schools and graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy in Boston. On March 17, 1941, she married Warren J. Allan and they established their home in Milton, Mass., where they raised their two sons.

Helen retired from New England Telephone Co. where she worked for 30 years as a telephone operator. In 1967 Helen and Warren relocated to Cape Cod where she worked for several doctors before joining Cape Cod Hospital Purchasing Department until her retirement. She also had her real estate license which she used to assist Warren in his real estate brokerage business.

Helen learned to play and enjoy the game of golf and was a member of The Cummaquid Golf Club. Winter vacations were usually spent in an area with a lot of golf courses to choose from, usually Wilmington, N.C.! She and Warren also enjoyed travel to unusual destinations like Majorca, Spain, and the Fiji islands.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Warren, at age 97, on Nov. 6, 2012, after almost 72 years of marriage.

Her strength, wisdom, independent spirit and simple presence will be deeply missed by her family.

She is survived by a son, Steven, of Plymouth, Mass., and his children Lindsay of Wakefield, Mass., and Christopher (Krista) and their two children of Plymouth; and son Robert (Michele) of Skaneateles, N.Y., and his children Michael (Lorin) and their three sons of McClean, Va.; Elizabeth (Edward) Moro and their four sons of Skaneateles, N.Y.; and Katharine (Kevin) Cooper and their two sons of Seabrook, S.C.

The family is extremely grateful to Ruth Donaruma and Linda Fisher and the entire staff of Home With You for the excellent care that Helen received during her illness.

Services were private and burial was in the family plot in the Ancient Cemetery in Yarmouthport, Mass.
