Lawrence A Bollen, Sr., 88, of Friendship, Arkansas, passed away Thursday September 22, 2005, at a local hospital in Malvern. He was born July 3, 1917, at Caney, Ark. to the late Sam Henry Bollen and Maceties Whitley Bollen.

He served two six-month tours in the Civilian Conservation Corps, one in Wyoming and one at Lake Catherine State Park. Additionally, he served in the U.S. Navy during W.W.II as a member of the 8th Construction Battalion (CB's).

After the war, he married Nettie Kate Sealy of Friendship. He worked as a farmer and a finish carpenter before being employed by Reynolds Metal Company until his retirement. Having come through the depression, he and his wife Kate had a strong work ethic, and were strong advocates of education, raising six children each earning a college degree and three with advanced degrees.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kate Sealy Bollen: two brothers and two sisters, Gracie Burris, Hallie Bollen, Callie Mae Barrett and Lyndal Bollen.

Survivors include three sons, Lt. Col Allen Bollen and wife Jean of Malvern, Ark., Ray Bollen, M.D. and wife Janie of Malvern, Ark., Paul Bollen and wife Kathi of Mena, Ark.; three daughters, June Norman and husband, Gail of Albuquerque, N.M., Gail Lee R.Ph and husband David of Chicago, ILL.. and Joyce Hood and husband Gary of College Station, Texas; and 17 grandchildren.
