John N. Cullen, Sr., 88, of Exeter Township, passed away on October 5, 2013 in the Reading Hospital following a brief illness. He was the husband of Constance Hanson Cullen.
Raised in Long Island, NY and Chicago, IL, he was the son of Herbert J. Cullen and Loretta L. Cullen (nee Shea).
Following his graduation from Carl Schurz High School, Chicago, IL in 1943, he proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II.
John received a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University where he served as Senior Class President and participated on the varsity track and football teams. He earned a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Harvard University.
John served as Vice President and General Manager of the Industrial Products Division of General Battery Corporation. During his retirement, he became a Certified PSIA Ski Instructor and taught skiing into his 80's at Blue Mountain Ski School, Palmerton, PA. He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena and the Berks County Dog Training Club.
In addition to his spouse, John is survived by his children with his first spouse, Hope T. Rood: Priscilla Kovalsky, wife of Kenneth Kovalsky, M.D., Bonita Springs, FL; John Cullen, Jr., husband of Susan Denaro, Wyomissing; Jeffrey Cullen, Wyomissing; David Cullen, husband of Jill Haley, Exeter; Hope Peek, wife of Eric Peek, Chevy Chase, MD; Virginia Rush, wife of Jeffrey Rush, Wyomissing; Peter Cullen, Atlanta, GA; Mark Cullen, M.D., husband of Michelle Cullen, M.D., The Dalles, OR; Matthew Cullen, West Reading; and Sarah Reed, wife of Matthew Reed, Kutztown.
He is also survived by two step-children, Nina Panzer, wife of Dale Panzer, M.D., Gladwyne, PA, and Robert Butera, husband of Kristen Butera, Devon, PA. Also surviving are seventeen grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his beloved brother, Lawrence T. Cullen.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Catherine of Sienna RCC, 4975 Boyertown Pike, Reading, PA 19606 on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at 10 a.m. with a viewing prior beginning at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery.
