Son of Rev. James Burriss and brother of Rev. Jacob Burriss who was pastor of Salem Baptist Church from 1852-66, located at that time five and a half miles northwest of Anderson. Salem Baptist Church moved to its present location in 1873. Rev. James Hembree was pastor from 1813-1849 and died in 1849.
The Salem Baptist Church Cemetery located at the site of the new (1873) church contains a marble marker inset in a brick pillar that reads "Burriss Cemetery 1840."
The name is sometimes spelled Bryant Boroughs, Bryant Burriss and Briant Boroughs. Tombstone says Bryan Boroughs.
1840 census: Bryant Boroughs
1850 census: Bryant Burroughs
1860 census: Bryant Burris
1870 census: Bryan Burress
Bryan Boroughs spelled his surname Boroughs; it can be seen in his own hand on the Circular letter he wrote to the Baptist Saluda Association in 1865. It is also on his tombstone, as Bryan Boroughs.
Descendant Thomas R. Boroughs wrote:
"Bryan Boroughs had three wives. His first wife Elizabeth (Betsy) Brown (1796-1838) was the mother of most of his children and may have died after the birth of her last child, Mary Eliza. Bryant then married two sisters, Elizabeth (1800-1841) and Mary Wigington (1816-1871) Elizabeth bore him two children, Martha Ann Boroughs (1839-1892) and Joseph Newton Borroughs (1840-1920). The birth of Joseph may have been the cause of her death. He states that he did not know his mother and was "mothered" by one of his older sisters (see "Journey with the Wagonmaster" by J. N. Borroughs). Bryant then married Mary Wigington, and she bore him one child, Civilla (Sivilla) Boroughs."
(Columbia, S.C.) THE DAILY PHOENIX, 22 October 1870, p.2: "DEAD.-We are pained to record the of death of Rev. Bryant Boroughs, a minister of the Baptist denomination, which sad event occurred at his residence in this County on Tuesday morning last, in the seventy-eighth year of his age. He had been in bad health for the last two years, and his death was not unexpected. He was a native of this County, and had served in the ministry for more than forty years, with faithfulness and zeal. ...Anderson Intelligencer."
