Alfred was the son of James Crawford and Deborah (Mullholland) Gunsalus. He moved with his family to Bremer Count, Iowa in 1860. He married Margaret B. Gruber on 10 Oct 1867. Alfred and Maggie had two children, Florence and Ella.
Alfred served during the Civil War in Co. F, Iowa 9th Infantry Regiment and was a Quartermaster Sergeant.
