Joseph Newton Sherrill, Jr., died on October 4, 2013 at the age of 84. Funeral services will be at the First Presbyterian Church of Wichita Falls at 11:00 AM, Monday, October 7, 2013, with Dr. Isaac Butterworth officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery under the direction of Lunn's Colonial Funeral Home.

Visitation will be held from 3:00-4:00 PM on Sunday, October 6, 2013 at Lunn's Colonial Funeral Home.

Mr. Sherrill was born in Wichita Falls on August 1, 1929, the son of Merry Terrill and Joseph Newton Sherrill. He attended public schools in Wichita Falls, graduating from Wichita Falls Senior High School in 1946. He went to Schreiner Junior College in Kerrville, Texas for one year before entering Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the fall of 1947. At MIT, he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and took a five year program in Marine Transportation, which included a year at sea aboard American Export Lines merchant ships. He made four voyages to the Mediterranean, the Middle East and India prior to his graduation from MIT in 1952.

Sherrill received his Juris Doctoris degree from Harvard Law School in the class of 1955 and at the same time was commissioned a Lieutenant in the United States Army. He was stationed at Fort Devens, Massachusetts, serving as the Legal Officer for the Army Security Training Center. He was a member of American, Texas and Wichita County Bar Associations and was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court.

In 1955, Mr. Sherrill married Nancy Gray of Urbana, Illinois, whom he had met while both were students in the Boston area. Following Mr. Sherrill's tour of duty in the Army, the couple returned to Wichita Falls and Mr. Sherrill commenced the practice of law in the firm of Rogers, Eggers & Sherrill. He continued with this firm, now known as Sherrill, Crosnoe & Goff, for 56 years.

Mr. Sherrill was formerly a director of First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Wichita Falls and the Texas Bank & Trust. He has served as a director of First National Bank of Byers since 1961. In the course of his career, he served as a Director and Officer of multiple companies and corporations and as a trustee for numerous private trusts.

Mr. Sherrill was an elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Wichita Falls, where he had been a member since 1958. He had also served as a trustee of the church and as Superintendent of the Sunday School. He was a member of the Permanent Judicial Committee of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. and was a Trustee of Trinity University in San Antonio.

Throughout his professional career, Mr. Sherrill was active in local Philanthropic organizations, and served as a trustee and chairman of the Hardin Foundation for Wichita County from 1968 to 2011. He was a trustee of the Midwestern State University Foundation, the John & Nevils Wilson Foundation, and the West Foundation, all of which gave significant funds to various Wichita Falls area non-profit institutions, such as Midwestern State University, United Regional Health Care System, the North Texas Rehabilitation Center and Wichita Falls Independent School District. He was a founding director of the Wichita Falls Area Community Foundation, the Robert and Ruby Priddy Charitable Trust and the Jacque Wilson Charitable Trust. Under Mr. Sherrill's direction, the Jacque Wilson Charitable Trust assembled a large collection of American 20th century prints by significant artists. In 2004, this collection was given to Mrs. Sherrill's alma mater, Wellesley College, for its Davis Museum.

Mr. Sherrill is survived by his wife, Nancy Gray Sherrill, his son, Joseph Newton Sherrill III and two daughters Faith Sherrill of Woodland Park, Colorado and Lucy Farr of Evanston, Illinois. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law Mary Ellen Salmon and his son-in-law Randolph Farr. The Sherrill's six grandchildren are Joseph and Dorothy Sherrill, Dan and Lucy Jones and Charles and Nancy Farr.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Hospice of Wichita Falls, P.O. Box 4804, Wichita Falls, TX 76308-0804 of the Good Samaritan Fund of Presbyterian Manor, 4600 Taft Blvd., 76308-4935.
