The funeral services for Peter Ossewaarde, aged 63, were held yesterday at Zeeland in the Second Reformed church with Rev. Richard J. Vandenberg officiating, and interment took place in Zeeland cemetery.
For some years Mr. Ossewaarde has been a hardware dealer and also a clothing merchant on Main street, Zeeland.
He is the brother of the late James Ossewaarde, who under “Teddy’ Roosevelt’s administration was appointed chaplain in the United States army, and was stationed in the Philippines and other fortifications in the United States and lastly was stationed on Alcatraz Island in Golden Gate harbor, which the government has since turned into a large prison for No. 1 enemies of the nation, including such men as Al Capone.
Mr. Ossewaarde was appointed by President “Teddy” Roosevelt, since up to that time there were no Reformed Church ministers as Chaplains in the entire army, and Mr. Roosevelt insisted that there should be. Peter Ossewaarde was prominent in church circles, was a charter member of the Second Reformed church and for a number of years served in the consistory. Nine years ago he retired from active business.
Surviving besides the widow are a son, Ernest; a daughter, Helen; a brother, the Rev. John Ossewaarde, and a sister Mrs. Kate Pyle, all of Zeeland
