Katherine Ann Hall Gates, a longtime resident of Charleston and the Outer Banks of North Carolina, died at the age of 91 after a long illness. Katherine Ann was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. C.W. Hall of Hutchinson, Kansas. She came east and graduated from The National Cathedral School for Girls in Washington DC and completed her college studies at the University of Kansas.

In 1945 she married Charles B. Gates, Jr. of this city and lived in Boston, MA where Mr. Gates completed his law degree at Harvard University. They moved back to Charleston in 1949. Mrs. Gates became an active member of the Kanawha Presbyterian Church, Garden Club, Junior League of Charleston, The Kings Daughters and Lucy Quarrier Weavers among many other interests.

She and her husband made their summer home on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It quickly became a gathering place for family and many friends over the years. She was thrilled to celebrate her 90th birthday at the Roanoke Island Aquarium with family and dear friends.

Katherine was a founding supporter of the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, Kansas now part of the Smithsonian Museum of Space Exploration. Deep roots in the Kansas prairie were never forgotten. Mrs. Gates was an active participant in the Hulland Cattle Ranch owned by her family and later became owner of the Gates/Hall Farm still in operation in western Kansas. An active owner, she kept close ties to the farm and her friends in Hutchinson. Mrs. Gates was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Charles, in 1996.

She is survived by her children, Ione DeHaven Gates Hardy (John), Charles Bernard Gates, III (Marsha) and Ann Katherine Gates (Jim). Mrs. Gates was forever active in the lives of her seven grandchildren. She always wanted to know what was going on and, at times, kept a closer tab on them that they might have imagined. Her grandchildren are Emily Gates-Groves (Todd) of Ohio, Christopher Gates (Amber) and Heather Gates of Charleston. Kathryn and Ann Ashley Hardy, of Virginia, Charles Westmoreland (Rose) of Georgia and Brooke Westmoreland Johnson (Andrew) of Colorado. She also had the chance to get to know her three great-grandchildren; Aiden and Avery Gates-Groves of Ohio, and Chloe Gates of Charleston.

A Memorial Service was held on Saturday, February 9 at Kanawha United Presbyterian Church.
