William Howard Freeman, 92, of New Market, Virginia, passed away on October 2, 2013, at Emeritus of Harrisonburg.

William was born on March 20, 1921, in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Letitia Lord Freeman and Howard Nason Freeman, M.D.

He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Helen Shuler Freeman. They were united in marriage on August 5, 1940.

He was preceded in death by his son, Howard Lee Freeman, and siblings, E. Louise Litten and Lyle Lord Freeman.

William was a veteran in World War II. He loved motorcycles and fast cars, built and redesigned vehicles. He raised chinchillas, designed and built their cages and water bottles. He worked at Fairchild's Aircraft in Hagerstown, Md., and received an award for working on the C-119 aircraft. He and Helen were florists. He developed a wire funeral basket for flowers. They owned the Evergreen Florist in New Market and Broadway. They built greenhouses, raised tropical plants and spring bedding plants as well as cut flowers for their business. Helen is a charter member of the Cohee Garden Club and Bill received a pin from the Life Membership to the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs. He was a dental technician doing crown and bridge work for many dentists. In his later years, his passion was his computer. He taught himself. He loved to read and wrote a book four years ago. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was always teasing the grandchildren. He said when he turned 100 he was going to buy a new Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He was very artistic and a man of many talents.

He is survived by Billie (James) Campbell of New Market, Deitra (Richard) Downin of Harrisonburg, Beverly Kline of Waynesboro, and Thomas Freeman of New Market, and foster son, John Henry.

Grandchildren are James (Leslie) Campbell, Kristine (Blake) Rohrer, Amy (Dale) Ritchie, Stacy (Kelly) Freeman, Gina (Greg) Yost, Ginger (Craig) Baur, Jill (Randy) Cosner, Anita (John) Sites, Tony (Shanna) Kline, and Marshall Freeman. Foster grandchildren are Brenda, Lisa, and Dennis Henry.

Great-grandchildren are Daniel, Anna and Sarah Rohrer, Adam and Kayla Dove, Brandon and Bryce Freeman, Tyler, Keely and Lindy Yost, Evan and Morgan Sites, Gunnar and Isla Baur, Cash and Mea Cosner, Haley, Marshall, Tyler and Kaleb Freeman. He also is survived by his beloved cat, "Howie."

He is also survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews. His special niece, Pat Brumback, was like a daughter to him and always there for him.

The Rev. Jeffrey Sonafelt will conduct a funeral service 11 a.m. Saturday, October 5, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, East Lee Street in New Market. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends following the graveside service at Emmanuel Church.

Friends may call at the Theis Funeral Chapel in New Market 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Friday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the New Market Fire & Rescue or the Cat's Cradle in Harrisonburg.
