Charles R. "Sonny" Copenheaver, 65, of Jackson Township, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, at York Hospital. He was the husband of Patricia E. (Myers) Copenheaver, with whom he celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary on June 7.

Born Feb. 1, 1937, in Manchester Township, he was the son of the late Charles W.O. and Geraldine M. (Leader) Copenheaver.

He was a carpenter for Carpenters and Millwrights Local No. 191 in York for 41 years and was its president for 18 years. He was a member of Motor Menders Street Rod and Custom Club and a former member of Hanover Street Rods Club. He was a member of the William Penn Class of 1955.

He served in the Navy from 1955 to 1959.

Also surviving are a son, Ray A. "Butch" Copenheaver of Spring Grove; a daughter, Cynthia M. Hilbert of Mount Wolf; five grandchildren; three brothers, Terry M. Copenheaver and Barry L. Copenheaver, both of York, and Timothy C. Copenheaver of Winterstown; and two sisters, Christine Ziegler of Wellsville and Trudy Parthree of Dover.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Zane T. Copenheaver, who died May 13, 2002.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Irwin Funeral Home, 175 N. Main St., Spring Grove, with the Rev. Richard E. Godfrey, pastor of Madison Avenue Church of the Brethren in York, officiating. Burial will be in Salem Union Cemetery in Dover with military rites by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
