In 1940 the Atwood family moved to Earkes Springs, near Oak Harbor, which later became the very site of the Navy Seaplane Base. Shirley attended the Oak Harbor Christian School grades 2-7 and graduated from Oak Harbor High School in 1953.
She Attended Skagit Valley Junior College (next door to the High School) in 1954. She worked at National Fruit Canning Co., and West Coast Telephone Co.
She contracted polio in 1956, recovering in three and one half months. She attended the Multnomah School of the Bible in Portland, OR in 1959.
Her roommate while working at the Telephone Co. was Lynn Anderson-Lynn introduced Shirley to her brother, Willie Anderson. Willie and Shirley were married June 3, 1960 at Emmanuel Baptist Church (Then at Cleveland and Hazel Streets.) She was a faithful member of Emmanuel Baptist Church until her death.
She loved to play the piano and accordion. She operated a day care in Mount Vernon for 25 years.
Three children were born to Willie and Shirley Anderson: Kenneth, Kolleen and Karen.
She passed away in Mount Vernon, January 12, 2010.
Her husband Willie Anderson preceded her in death September 11, 1995 and her son Kenny on October 4, 2004.
She is survived by sister-in-law Gerri Atwood, brother Lynn Atwood of Kirkland, two daughters, Kolleen Anderson and Karen Sliva of Mount Vernon, six grandsons Kory, Billy Travis, Jason, Nick and Stephen, 5 great-grandchildren Austin, madalyn, twins Alexa and Makayla and Kaylie.
Memorial services were held on January 19, 2010. Arrangements in care of Hawthorne Funeral Home, Mount Vernon.
