Mary Oveta Pickering, 87, went to be with the Lord at 9:17 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, 2005, at her home with her family by her side. Her daughter and grandson live at the home. She was born May 5, 1918, in Harrisburg, Ill., to Robert G. and Verna Lee (Rice) Anderson. She married the late Arvel A. Pickering on Jan. 26, 1936. He died Aug. 20, 1990. A member of the First Baptist Church in Roxana, she always helped with Bible school and was a deaconess for many years. She had a love for children and held Bible class for the neighborhood children in her home. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, John and Jae Pickering of Rosewood Heights; two daughters and a son-in-law, Martha Pickering-Major of Wood River and Mary and Art Phelps of Cottage Hills; 10 grandchildren and their spouses, Robin Powell, Jill Little, Kim Feeney, Jeff Pickering, Greg Phelps, David and Bev Phelps, Tim and Nicki Phelps, Gary Grant, Diana Grant-Bramlet and Jim Bramlet; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and friends. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Kevin Major, six brothers and six sisters. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto. Graveside services for family and friends will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto, with her nephew, Claude Johnson, officiating.
