Longtime Anchorage resident Elbert P. "Al" Chapman, 88, died Aug. 24, 2004, at Providence Alaska Medical Center, surrounded by his family, after an extended illness. A memorial service was held at First United Methodist Church, 725 W. Ninth Ave., with a reception afterward. A graveside ceremony with military honors was at Fort Richardson National Cemetery.

Mr. Chapman was born Jan. 31, 1916, in Flat River, Mo. He proudly served in World War II as a member of the Army Air Corps, 388th Bombardment Group. He later retired as a captain from the Air Force Reserves. He worked in and owned a public accounting firm for many years. After making his home in Anchorage in 1966, he worked in and retired from the Anchorage School District. Mr. Chapman devoted many years as an advocate of youth organizations, with a special interest in sports. He was a lifetime member of the Elks and an active member of the 388th Bombardment Group until recent years. His family wrote: "Most knew Elbert for his sense of humor and generous heart. He will be missed by many." Mr. Chapman was preceded in death by his wife, Alberta Chapman.

He is survived by his sister, Vera Chapman of Loveland, Colo.; sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Jane Chapman of Wenatchee, Wash., Brad and Yvonne Chapman of Anchorage and Tate and Beth Chapman of Juneau; daughter, Kim Warner of Anchorage; grandchildren, James, Chase, Cody, Devin, Kalea and Breanne; and one great-grandchild. Arrangements are with Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
