Settled Near Janesville When the City
Was But a Small Village -- Man
Esteemed by Many in All Portions
of the County -- Funeral Held Today

James Bear died at 2 o'clock this morning at the North Bluff street home of his daughter, Mrs. A.L. Gage. Cause of his demise was heart trouble. He was stricken on Monday and gradually grew worse. Mr. Bear was one of the pioneer settlers of Rock County. He was eighty-three years of age. He was a native of the state of Pennsylvania and there worked at the leather trade.

In 1846 he came West settling on a farm near the city in the town of Janesville. In 1875 he moved to Janesville but returned to the farm in 1879, where he remained until the death of his wife in 1891.

Mr. Bear was a man in all that the word implies. He was doing good at all times. Friends he possessed by the hundreds and many will mourn his death. In politics Mr. Bear was a staunch Republican having on several occasions been elected to different town offices.

He leaves four children, three daughters and a son. Two of the children reside in this city. Mrs. A.L. Gage and J.L. Bear. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Stephen Tool, of Ackley, Iowa.
