James Black known as Bud and mentioned in census as Jimmy was born in Mississippi to Volner B Black 1830-1870 and Nancy J Howard 1837-1897. He had three brothers Thomas R, Volony, and Jefferson Davis. Census of 1870 and 1880 show his family lived in Pontotoc, Mississippi. He married Nancy America Craig in 1891 in Pontotoc, Mississippi. The 1900 census shows JR Black and Nannie had 3 children Luke 5, Claude 3, and Myrtle 1 living in Friendship, Pontotoc, Mississippi along with all his brothers. His wife died Oct of 1915 and he died Jan 1918. They had 8 children that were separated and little is known. Fannie went to live with a doctor and worked for the family, the twins were in a census with his brothers wife Dora Smith Black in 1920, Jewel later shows living with Fannie and Early in 1920.

Children of James and Nancy were William Luke, Claude Elby, Myrtle, Fannie Lillian, Dora, Jewel, Irma, and Irva.
