Obituary:

James Ambrose Madison (1894-1949), former Jackson County, North Carolina resident was killed in an auto accident in Iowa on Tuesday, January 18, 1949 at 4:00 p.m. near Sioux City. He was the son of Professor Robert L. Madison of Webster and the late Mrs. Madison. He was educated at North Carolina State College, Vanderbilt University, and at Northwestern University.

At the age of sixteen he was awarded the Carnegie Medal for Heroism. He served in World War I with the Sixth Marines, second division as a 2nd Lieutenant in the battles of Chateau-Thierry and Belleau Woods. He was a member of the Elks Club, Masonic Order, Veterans of Foreign War, and the Forty and Eight Club.

Mr. Madison is survived by his father, one sister Miss Annie Louise Madison, three brothers Robert of Florida, Monroe and Banister of Webster, a daughter Ella Virginia Madison of Sylva, and a son James A. Madison of Chapel Hill.

Funeral services will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church in Sylva at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, January 22nd. Burial will take place at St. David's Episcopal Church at Cullowhee.
