A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Loysville, Perry County, August 8, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 13 as a private with Co. H, 133rd Pennsylvania Infantry. He was shot in the left forearm at the battle of Fredericksburg on December 13, 1862, forcing surgeons to amputate. He discharged the service by surgeon's certificate March 12, 1863, at Carver U.S. Hospital, Washington DC.
After the war, he married Asenath "Sena" Burd but no children were found. He died from "inflammation of brain" resulting from a fall two days earlier.
