ROLLA ALFORD SERVICES SET

A memorial service for Rolla Alford, who served as minister of music in a number of Long Beach churches for many years, will be held during the regular 11 a.m. worship service Sunday at First United Methodist Church. Mr. Alford died Wednesday [April 17] at the age of 77.

Mr. Alford, who was graduated from Southwestern College, Winfield, Kan., and studied voice and choir directing in New York City and other eastern cities, came to Long Beach in 1914. He married Dorothy Bell, a pianist, in 1917.

Among the churches he and his wife served were East Long Beach Methodist, Grace Methodist, Calvary Presbyterian, East Side Christian, Grace Methodist of New York City, First Methodist of San Pedro, First Baptist and First Methodist.

He served First Methodist from 1921 to 1924 and again from 1935 until his retirment as minister of music emeritus in 1971.

In 1926 Mr. Alford organized the Haydn-Handel Oratorio Society and directed the first performance of "The Messiah" at the old auditorium. In 1930 he became choral conductor for the Long Beach Recreation Commission. "The Messiah" was produced annually for 35 years.

The Alfords received many honors. When First United methodist built its new church their biography was placed in the cornerstone and the choir room was dedicated as the "Rolla and Dorothy Alford Music Room."

He belonged to a number of professional and honorary music organizations.
