December 14, 1919 - September 23, 2013
Cumberland, MD - J.D. Davis, 93, of Cumberland, MD, passed away Monday, September 23, 2013, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
Born December 14, 1919, in Berry, AL, Mr. Davis was the son of the late Foster Davis and Myrtie (Hollingsworth) Davis growing up during the depression years on their family farm, and was the last surviving member of four sisters and one brother.
J.D. worked picking cotton, raising watermelons, to working on the family farm cutting timber. Anything to make ends meet in those difficult times. Later he worked as a prison guard for some time. Then moved north and found employment at Glenn L. Martin Company, Baltimore MD, during WWII manufacturing airplanes, where he met his wife, Josephine Berg.
After working at Glenn L. Martin, J.D. found employment with Kelly Springfield Tire Co, Cumberland, MD, working as a production worker and moving to Department foreman in the Curing room, tread room and stock preparation at various times, from which he retired to Vero Beach, FL, for 29 years, and moved back to Cumberland four years ago, residing at the Cumberland Arms.
His love for life and family was unconditional. Any man can be a father, it takes someone special to be a dad, and that he was.
J.D. is survived by his wife of 69 years: Josephine; his son: Gerald "Bones" Davis and wife, Beth, Cumberland, MD; his grandsons: Brian and Kevin Davis, Myrtle Beach, SC; and his great grandson: Tyler Davis, Cumberland, MD.
