Married Frances L St. John circa 1928
No known children
Eddie Dampier was the second and last child born to his parents. He was born into a large extended Dampier family in San Jose and grew up surrounded by several generations of relatives in San Jose.
His immediate family was marked by tragedy. His father's first two children died young, a daughter burned when her clothing caught fire and son from diphtheria. His father's first wife pined away and died of pneumonia within a year of her daughter's death. Eddie knew none of them as they passed before he was born. His mother and father separated and divorced when he was 9.
Eddie showed aptitude as an athlete in high school and went into boxing at age 17, becoming a welter weight. He appeared in 91+ matches around the San Francisco Bay Area over a ten year period. He did very well in his early years, at one point winning 20 straight bouts. He suffered a decline, stayed out for a couple of years, came back to the ring and lost his last 4 bouts by knock outs. He retired in 1933.
After retiring he operated The Round One, a bar and restaurant in San Francisco and his wife a beauty parlor on Geary Street.
The couple had marital problems and separated, which upset him greatly. He died of "melancholia" in the backyard of one his uncles in San Jose.
His grand niece, Lucille Elaine Dampier Michie remembered him as a talented prize fighter who stayed too long in the ring, suffering the effects of his sport's hazard - too many punches to the head.
Began boxing career 26 April 1923. Last Match 23 May 1933
Overall record:
Wins: 44 (21 by KO)
Losses: 24 (8 by KO)
Draws: 21
