The absence of the 1890 US Federal Census presents research problems, but from what I have found, Bessie was the daughter of William Jefferson Smith (1835-1916) and Nancy Louisa (Smith) Smith (1840-1919). I believe their children were:
Thomas M. Smith 1859–1940
Mary Henrietta Smith 1862–1936
Syrynthia Loutilla Smith 1865–1961
William Smith 1869–1921
Minnie Louise Smith 1875–1915
Angie Smith 1878–1908

According to the 1900 US Federal Census, Bessie V Smith was born Dec 1885 in NC and lived in Eagle Mills, Iredell, NC. She was the daughter of William J Smith (b. NC), a farmer, and Nancy L Smith (b. NC). Her mother had 8 children, and all were living in 1900. Bessie was in school, could read, write and speak English. Household members included William J Smith 68, Nancy L Smith 54, Angie Smith 20, Bessie V Smith 14, Nannie Smith 10.

Her father was William Jefferson Smith and her mother was Nancy Louisa (Smith) Smith.
