In 1900 Mr. Atkins, a recently married man, was boarding at 119 Maverick Street in Boston without his wife Maude. (Unless she was mistakenly left off the census for that year.) Rufus was employed as a driver. The young couple's first child, Helen G. Atkins, passed away in Boston. She was born Dec. 12th and died Dec. 21st. 1899.
By 1910 the family had arrived in Gardner. Rufus, Maude and their daughter Mabel, 8, were renting from a Swedish family, the Walkonens, at 105 Washington Street. Mr. Atkins found work at an oil stove shop.
Ten years later the Atkins family was located at 191 Elm Street in Gardner. Rufus had been promoted to a foreman at the stove factory where he worked. The children at home were: Mabel, 18, and Muriel, 7.
A big move happened sometime in the Twenties. Rufus moved his wife and youngest daughter out to Long Beach, California. In 1930 and 1940 the trio were renting an apartment at 783 Dawson Avenue. A laundry hired Mr. Atkins as a mechanic. In 1940 Muriel was, for some reason, listed by the census taker with the last name Cunningham even though the form had her marked down as single.
