Thomas Granville Zachary, 92, a railway fireman when wood burning locomotives pulled trains in the South, died yesterday at 3:30 p.m. at his home in Corryton. He was for many years a fireman on the old East Tennessee Virginia & Georgia railroad, now a part of the Southern. He also fired wood burning engines on the North Georgia railroad that operated between Knoxville and Marietta, GA and later he was one of the early fireman on the railway line between Knoxville and Middlesboro, KY.

Mr Zachary became interested in tobacco growing and was the first in the Corryton community to grow tobacco growing. He understood cultivation of tobacco and knew how to produce the finest grades. Retiring from the railway the veteran engineer established a blacksmith shop. The old shop still stands near his home.

He was born near Big Flat creek and lived in that community most of his life. While a young man he became a member of Old Mount Pleasant church.

His wife was buried on his 88th birthday.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Corryton M E church. The Rev W O E Robinson will officiate assisted by Rev L C Childs and Rev Frank Mason. Burial in Zachary cemetery.
