Bernard C. "Bernie" Allen, 76, of 1307 Louis Drive, Niles, Mich., died at 6:55 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, at Woodfield Manor, Niles, following an extensive illness.

Mr. Allen was born July 26, 1920, at Ann Arbor, Mich. to Floyd and Anna Mortensen Allen, and lived in Niles and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., most of his life. In Niles, he owned and operated the former Bernie's Sunoco Service Station at 10th and Main Streets. In Fort Lauderdale, he was a member of the Plumbers' and Pipefitters' Union Local 719, and was a plumbing instructor at Atlantic Vocational Technical School.

Mr. Allen served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He was a member of the 87th Engineering Battallion Association and the National American Legion. He was a member of the Flying Clubs of both Ford Lauderdale and Niles, Four Flags. In Niles, he was also a member of the Lions Club and the Chamber of Commerce.

On Jan. 1, 1942, in Bangor, Mich., he married the former Lillian Pikal, who survives.

Also surviving are his daughter, Barbara Allen and son, Larry Allen, both of Niles, and son, Don Allen of Eustis, Fla.; his grandchildren, Andrea Bales of Fruitland, Fla., Stacey Allen of Atlanta, Ga. and Jeffrey Hoese of Niles; and his great-grandson, Alec Bales of Fruitland.

He is also survived by three sisters, Bernice Mijal of Sunrise Beach, Mo., Ruth Madder of Green Bay, Wis., and Dorothy Snyder of Venice, Fla.

A sister, Evelyn Williams, preceded him in death in August 1996.

Funeral services for Bernard Allen will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, at Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles, with Rev. Nolan R. Williams of Wesley United Methodist Church officiating.

A flag presentation by American Legion Post 26 Commander, John McLaughlin, and playing of Taps by Jay Crouch, will be at the funeral home following the services.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Halbritter Funeral Home.
