CONDUCTS RITES FOR MONTPELIER WOMAN

Funeral services for Edith Ashley Stevens, 42, who died last Thursday, were at 1 p.m., Monday, in the Montpelier LDS Fourth Ward Chapel. The daughter of the late Albert Ashley and Bessie Hoskins Ashley, she was born January 4, 1928 in Montpelier.

Mrs. Stevens attended schools in Montpelier and graduated from Montpelier High School with the Class of 1945. She and Gordon T. Stephens were married February 20, 1948. They later divorced. Her second marriage was to Leroy A. Stevens on December 3, 1963.

Except for a residence of nine years in Los Angeles area, she lived all her life in Montpelier. She was a member of the LDS Church and while living at Torrance was president of an elementary school PTA. She loved sports, outdoors and flowers.

Surviving besides her husband are two children, Thomas Dewey Stephens of Boise and Daniel Evan Stephens of Santa Paula, California; mother, Mrs. Bessie Ashley of Montpelier; three brothers and three sisters, Russell B. Ashley of Salt Lake City, Albert Keith Ashley, Mrs. Sylvester (Nathel) Busco, and Mrs. Lawrence (ElDean) Roberts, all of Montpelier, Ben C. Ashley of Soda Springs, and Mrs. John (Joan) Hanner of Esparto, California. Preceding her in death were two brothers and one sister, Ural Ashley, William Ashley and Maxine Johnson.

A medley of hymns was sung by Phillip Hulme, Ray Larsen, James Olsen and Dr. Paul Daines, followed by prayer by Wesley Williams; obituary and remarks, Bishop D. N. Meek; song, “Somewhere My Love,” Mrs. Walter Hunzeker, accompanied by Mrs. J. F. Spidell; speaker, Byron E. Mumford; closing song, “Going Home,” Max Haddock; prayer, John Rigby. Mrs. H. O. Petereit played the prelude and postlude music. Family prayer at the mortuary was given by A. O. Hayward.

The grave in the Montpelier cemetery was dedicated by Lawrence Roberts. Pallbearers were Lyle Bissegger, Phil Perkins, Merl Roberts, Arthur Rowland, Grant Irving and Sherman Burgoyne. Arrangements were by Matthews Mortuary.
