Accidentally Shot

Little Charley Fehring Dies Almost Instantly.


About nine o'clock on the morning of the Fourth little Charley Fehring was shot and instantly killed while passing along the sidewalk in front of J. C. Lewis & Co's hardware store by Jno. Arndt who was standing in the doorway of the store with a loaded revolver that he just purchased cartridges for to celebrate the Fourth. Those who were present and witnessed the affair claimed Arndt wanted to buy a box of blank cartridges for a 32 caliber revolver, and the store are not having them he purchased the box of bullet cartridges and loaded his revolver with the same and while standing in the doorway fooling with revolver it accidentally discharged, the ball striking little Charlie in the center of the back. The child gave a scream and ran towards Mead's drugstore when he fell to the sidewalk where he was immediately picked up by Charley Frick and carted to Dr. Herrington & Drake's office where he breathed his last not more than three minutes after he was shot. A large crowd soon gathered on the sidewalk, were you could hear words of lynching plainly expressed. Arndt was arrested by Marshall Boll at the home of Thomas Bradnock and the locked up in jail and on Thursday he was bound over to the Circuit court.

Borne to the Grave.

Funeral exercises over the remains of little Charley Fehring were held at the Lutheran church last Friday afternoon at two o'clock. The Rev. Grimms conducted the services. The casket was set in a profusion of beautiful flowers, the gifts of sorrowing friends. Many were present and the long cortege that passed from the church to the cemetery show the respect the departed one was held, and how much the little one was loved.

The sad accident was a great shock to parents and many friends, who will sincerely mourn the loss of the little one. He was of a sweet and amiable disposition and a perfect little gentlemen. He was born in this city on November 25, 1892. Parents, three brothers and four sisters have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement.
