Matilda Baricevic Stepovich died peacefully Tuesday (Nov. 25, 2003) at her home in Medford. She was 81 years of age. The daughter of Lawrence and Katherine Baricevic. Matilda was born April 24, 1922 in Portland, OR.
Following post-graduate work at the University of Oregon and the University of California at Berkeley she married Michael Anthony Stepovich at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Nov. 27, 1947 in Portland. The newlyweds moved to Fairbanks, AK in the winter of 1947.
Matilda led a full and varied life as wife and mother, political confidante and advisor, and civic leader. From 1957 to 1958 she was the First Lady of the Territory of Alaska. The Stepoviches moved to Southern Oregon in the late 1970's.
Survivors include her husband, Governor Mike Stepovich; and their thirteen children, Antonia Maria Gore, Maria Theresa Greulich, Michael Anthony, Jr., Peter Jerome, Christopher Alexander, Dominic Lawrence, Theodore Joseph, Nicholas Vincent, James Leo, Laura Maria Tramonte, Nada Maria Stockton, Andrea Maria Neville, and Melissa Maria Cook.
There are 35 grandchildren, Dominic, Timothy, Anna Kata and Rebecca Greulich, Matija, Lauren, Leah and Michael Anthony Stepovich, Peter, Antonia and Joseph Stepovich, Marko, Christopher Lawrence and David Stepovich, Alec and McKenzie Stepovich, Cela Stepovich, Melissa, Sidney, Nicole and James Stepovich , Michael Vincent, Nada, Vincent, Katherine and Joseph Tramonte, John Houston, Michael Joseph, David Lindsay, Laura and Samuel Stockton and Michael Thomas Neville.
The funeral Mass was held Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Fairbanks, AK. Interment followed at Birch Hill Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Medford.
