Following the death of his mother, he and his father and brothers left Van Zandt County and established cattle ranching operations in James Canyon near Cloudcroft, New Mexico. For several years they would drive cattle annually from New Mexico to Beaver in Oklahoma Territory or to Higgins in the Texas Panhandle. As barbed wire and the railroads made the drives impractical, the operation was broken up. Will met Miss Affa Pairlee Porter, whose family ranched and farmed in the state border area near Higgins. They married in now defunct Day County, Oklahoma Territory on February 5, 1899, his twenty-seventh birthday. He obtained several sections of land in Floyd County, Texas and the couple moved there where daughter Susie and son "Willie" were born near the Sandhill community.
After two decades of life in Floyd County, the Bairds moved to Canyon in Randall County in 1920 where Susie attended the West Texas State Teachers College. W. F. continued working in local stock raising operations. He was made a deputy sheriff in Randall County. In the 1930s he was employed on several Works Progress Administration projects.
He was a happy man with a playful, dry sense of humor and was well loved by his family.
