Vando William "Bill" Betti, 84, of Mt. Gilead, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family, Wednesday, September 18, 2013.

Bill was born in Kittanning, PA on December 26, 1928 to the late Nello and Gina (Rossi) Betti. He married Phyllis Irene Jack on October 13, 1951 in Elkton, Maryland and she survives him.

He was retired from PPG Industries, Crestline where he was one of the "59ers", the men and women who started working at Crestline when the Works #26 plant originally opened. Bill attended Kittanning High School. He served in the U.S. Navy for two years on the U.S.S. Valcour during World War II. In 1951 he re-enlisted in the Navy and served during the Korean War on shore duty since he had already served the country at sea. Bill played semi-pro football for the Ki's in PA. Bill was a member of the Catholic Church of the Sacred Hearts, Cardington and was a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 8054 Mt. Gilead, Amvets # 87, Mt. Gilead. Bill absolutely loved to play cards. He ran the Saturday poker game at the Mt. Gilead Amvets and enjoyed playing poker at the Crestline Eagles. He enjoyed hunting and placed 13th in the Pennsylvania State Archery Competition. He also liked trout fishing. His favorite spot was at the family owned Camp Suzanna in Benezette, PA He enjoyed harness racing as well as golf, bowling and baseball. He owned, raced and trained Standardbred Horses from 1967 until 2001. Bill served his community as a member of the Morrow County Fair Board.

He is survived by his four daughters: Jacqueline and Larry Smith, Galion, Irene Morris, Galion, Terry Betti- Parker, Mt. Gilead, Lorraine Treisch, Mansfield, his 5 grandchildren: Christopher and Brandy Morris, Galion, Gina and Martin Fife, Conneaut, LeAnn Treisch, Mansfield, Adam and Amber Parker, Galion, William Parker, Mt. Gilead, 9 great grandchildren: Pennelope and Alexandria Morris, Hailey, Ashton, Blake and Payton Fife, Summer Branham, Whitnee and Abigail Parker and his brother Anthony "Herm" Betti, Crestline.

He was preceded in death by his two brothers Albert and Alder Betti and two sisters Rose Shankle and Sarah Colo.

Friends may call Sunday from 3 until 8 p.m. at the Mark A. Schneider Funeral Home, Galion. A Vigil Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with Deacon Al Sisson officiating. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, Sept. 23, 2013 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Galion at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. John Miller, Celebrant. Full military honors will be given by the U.S. Navy and the Galion/Crestline Veteran's Burial Detail at the church immediately following the funeral Mass. Burial for the family will be held at Rivercliff Cemetery, Mt. Gilead.
