William Silas Fetterley, a resident of Prior township, Big Stone County, since the year 1884, died at his home at Point Welcome June 28 of heart disease. He was 75 years old. In the death of Mr. Fetterley, Big Stone county lost its most ardent follower of the horse-racing sport, for Mr. Fetterley was a great lover of fast horses not only in the early days of his life, but up until just a few years ago when he was to be seen out every fall with a horse or two entered in the races at the Big Stone County fair tracks at Clinton.
In the earlier days Mr. Fetterley made the circuit, entering horses at the different fairs, including meets in Aberdeen and many other points in South Dakota.
Born in Canada on December 24, 1852, Mr. Fetterley, with his parents, moved to Washington county, Minnesota, when a child. On November 9, 1873, he was united in marriage with Miss. Harriet Holt at Prescott, Wisconsin, to which union 10 children were born, seven of whom, besides the mother, survive. The deceased is also survived by two brothers, thirty-three grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mr. Fetterley moved with his family to Prior township in the year 1884 where he resided until his death. All of the surviving children were in attendance at the funeral service, which was held Sunday at the farm home. Interment was made in the Clinton Cemetery.
Among those in attendance at the funeral from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. Whitney Fetterley of Carson Lake, Mrs. Nellie Clark and family and Willmer Burton of Hastings, and Mr. and Mrs. Brannen of Linton, No. Dak.
