Mr. Barnes was born Aug. 24, 1939, in Newnan. At the age of 19, he began his law enforcement career as a deputy at the Coweta County Sheriff's Department, under Sheriff Lamar Potts. His long and distinguished career in law enforcement led him to jobs at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, and the Georgia Department of Corrections, where he retired in Aug. of 2001.
A funeral will be held Friday, March 1, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home. Dr. Gene Tyre and the Rev. Larry Lattimer will officiate, and burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Serving as pallbearers will be Robert Stokely, James Kirk, Willie Pritchett, Hershel Norred, Jay Fuseller, Duke Cole Blackburn III, and Danny Brown. Honorary pallbearers will be Carl Miller, Ed Williams, Mutt Hunter, Duke Blackburn, Jr., Willie Clements, and peace officers.

Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Barnes; and mother, Etta Willene Barnes, both of Newnan; sons Barry Barnes of Newnan and Todd Darnell of Dalton; daughters Amanda Storey of Haralson, Donna Lynn Williams of Moreland, and Cindy Hannah and Kellie Worth of Newnan; and sister Ivera Smith of Powder Springs.
