According to his death certificate (DeKalb Co., #23809; daughter Carrie Jackson, informant), he was the son of Caleb THURSTON and Harriet VanGALDER. (In fact, she or whomever wrote the information on the document was apparently confused at the time of completing the certificate. His father was Zebulon THURSTON and Caleb was his grandfather. His mother was Sarah KELLEY and Harriet VanGALDER was his late wife, Carrie's mother.)

John served in the Union forces during the Civil War, having enlisted in the Co. E, 2nd WI Cavalry, USA.

The adjacent photo shows him in military dress following the War. Actually printed on the glass, its condition results from a fire at his daughter Kate's house in the early 1900s.
