Edward Eastman was born and college educated in Randolph, Vermont. He married an unidentified woman and had one son: George, and then married Catharine Granger June 3, 1841. The couple had three children together. He worked on his father's farm and put two younger brothers through college also. He came to Dodge County, WI in 1846, but soon established himself in a bookstore on Ferry Street in Oshkosh, WI that same year. He was one of the first settlers here. He became postmaster from 1846-1849, 1853-1861; Assemblyman for Winnebago County in 1850; Alderman; 1st mayor of Oshkosh, 1853. In 1849 he built a frame Greek Revival house on Washington Blvd, which was later torn down and the site became Roe Park.

Edward Eastman, the first mayor of Oshkosh, its first postmaster and one of the first members of the assembly from this district. The father was appointed postmaster by President Polk in 1846, and was reappointed in 1853 by President Pierce, his incumbency closing with the inauguration of Lincoln in 1861. On the organization of the city government in 1853, the elder Eastman was chosen the first mayor of Oshkosh. In 1850-1 he represented the district in the assembly, and during the later years he was an alderman.
