Columbiana - A celebration of life will be held in honor of Kathryn Firestone on Saturday, September 21, 2013, at the East Fairfield United Methodist Church. Kathryn went to be with the Lord on the day of her 100th Birthday, September, 15, 2013.

Kathryn was born on September 15, 1913, in Rogers, Ohio then moved to Pineville, WVA. She was one of 5 children born to H. Clifford Gorby and Iva Lyons Gorby. Kathryn moved from Pineville, WVA, to East Palestine, Ohio, in 1922, to live with her maternal grandparents, Matthew and Madora Ann Nahar Lyons, after her mother died during childbirth of her youngest sister Mary Iva.

Kathryn graduated from East Palestine High School in 1931. After graduation, Kathryn worked in her father's law office in Columbiana, Ohio. Kathryn married Clyde Firestone on October 18, 1950. Kathryn enjoyed being a homemaker and was very talented in the kitchen baking and canning vegetables from the numerous gardens that she and her husband planted. Guests were often greeted with the aroma of fresh baked bread and cinnamon rolls. The couple enjoyed working together with their many fruit trees and berry bushes. Clyde Firestone went to be with the Lord on March 20, 2000.

Kathryn was a member of the East Fairfield United Methodist Church. She was an active member in the Beacon Light Sunday School Class and was the Financial Secretary for many years. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women.

Even though Kathryn and her siblings were divided by distance at the death of their mother, Kathryn remained very close with her sister Rachel Cuthbert who passed away in 2006 due to complications from MS. Kathryn demonstrated her nurturing abilities as she cared for her sister and her sister's home for many years . Kathryn was also preceded in death by her youngest sister Mary Iva Shipman from Parkersburg, WVA, and her brothers Halwyn and Howard Gorby.

Kathryn moved from her home of 60 years on State Route 46 in New Waterford, to Whispering Pines Assisted Living facility in Columbiana, Ohio in 2010.

Although Kathryn and her husband were not blessed with children of their own, Kathryn will be remembered by her many nieces and nephews as a nurturing parent figure. She will be especially missed by her grand nephews and guardians, David and Carol Vollnogle and Jon and Charlotte Vollnogle and their families.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, September 21, 2013, at the East Fairfield United Methodist Church, New Waterford, Ohio with the Reverend Susan Antolik officiating. Friends and family will be received one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Columbiana Cemetery.

The family has asked that memorial contributions be made to the East Fairfield United Methodist Church.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana.
