Sophia Abney, a daughter of Jonathan Bay Abney and Martha "Pasty" [née Wills] Abney, was born in the bounds of Lorick's (now known as Herbert's) Ferry on the Saluda River in Edgefield District, South Carolina on the 24th of June 1801.

Sophia married John Nathan Chapman on November 30th 1817. The following known children were born to this union:
Daniel Abney (1817-1845)
Giles (1818-1847)
John Abney (1821-1906)
Martha "Patsy" (1822-1853)
Andrew Mills (1825-1914)
Thomas E. (1827-1864)
William (1830-1853)
