He served in the Army Air Force in WWII as a Captain rising to Lt Colonel in 1944-1945 in the China Burma India Campaign for 19 months under General Donald L Hardy. On September 17, 1945, he was driving his family in Middle Island, on Long Island, NY. A truck sideswiped their car on a narrow road. A hurricane had blown itself out over the Carolinas and New York causing heavy rain. He and his wife Caroline Patterson Bush were taken to a nearby army hospital but their 15 year old daughter Henrietta Bush was killed.
He died in the Veterans Medical Center in Quezon City after a long illness. He was awarded a Bronze Star in India.
