Virginia Louise Gunter Maddox, 88, of Cox Mill Road, Sanford died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2007, at Sanford Health and Rehabilitation.

She was born in Lee County, daughter of the late Joe W. Gunter and Rosa Stutts Gunter. She was preceded by her husband, C.E. "Sam" Maddox. She was also preceded in death by her sisters and brothers and a son, Ira Edwin Maddox.

She is survived by her sons, Eugene Maddox and wife Jesse Mills Maddox of Cape Carteret, Gary Maddox and wife Donna Thomas Maddox of Sanford, Barbara Kirby Maddox of Sanford, wife of deceased son, 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. She was a long time and very active member of Morris Chapel United Methodist Church, serving as church historian and choir member.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, 2007, at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Gary Maddox. The funeral will be conducted at Morris Chapel United Methodist Church Sunday, Sept. 23, 2007, at 3:p.m. with Pastor David Malcom presiding. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Women of Morris Chapel Church or The Morris Chapel UMC Scholarship Fund, 8533 Cox Mill Road, Sanford, NC 27332.
