Joseph LaMotta was the son of former middleweight boxing champion Jake LaMotta. His father's career became immortalized in 1980 by Martin Scorsese in the film Raging Bull. Joseph LaMotta became president and founder of the J. LaMotta Food Inc.and was in the process of launching its products, including the LaMotta Tomato Sauce, dedicated to his famous father. The younger LaMotta was among 229 passengers aboard Swissair 111 that crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Halifax on September 2, 1998. He is predeceased by his older brother, Jake Jr., who died from liver cancer in February that year.
