William Hatcher Barnett was my great-grandfather. He served in the Confederate Army as a flag bearer during Pickett's Charge (one of the bloodiest battles at Gettysburg) and was the last living survivor. The Flag bearers were usually the first ones targeted by the enemy during a battle, and he was reported to have carried the Bible in one hand and the confederate flag in the other. Although he was from Montgomery Co, VA, he died of a heart attack while visiting a son in Bottrell, Alberta Canada in 1933. Pictures of him and his Civil War buddies are located at the Salem Historical Museum, Salem VA
